Saturday, February 21st, Municipal Auditorium saw The Kansas City Roller Warriors home teams take the track for their 11th season. The teams are scaled down and there is a noticeable lack of rookies this year but there was some restructuring during the off season that really helped to make all four teams more competitive.
Plus, if you need another reason to get excited, this season sees the return of Case Closed, Rita Ploy, Track Rat, and Xcelerator!
The first game of the night saw Mary Lou Wretched and her Knockouts defending their title against the Victory Vixens led by Rump Wrecker. The Vixens were able to get an early lead and hold it through most of the game. At one point in the second period, The Knockouts caught up and were leading but the Vixens had victory in their sights and fought their way back to the lead and held it for a win of 198 to 165.
After a brief intermission, the action started back up with the number four team, The Dreadnought Dorothys, going up against The Black Eye Susans. Through the first period, Susans' team captain Tuff Noogies and her defense squad seemed to hold the Dorothys in place while the offense, led by Peanut Butter Panic, just picked them apart. At half time, the score was favoring the Susans at 93 to 74.
Team captain Erin No Braugh must have really found a way to motivate her team back in the locker room because when the Dorothys came back for the second period things really started to turn around. The offense, led by Case Closed, now seemed to be finding their way through and around the pack. The defense started hitting back and by the time the dust settled, The Dreadnought Dorothys had won the game 178 to 152.
Some nay-sayers may call it a fluke since it's statistically impossible to lose every time. It's this reporters humble opinion that The Dreadnought Dorothys could be the team to keep an eye on this season. They are down a couple of players but they have very few rookies and the players they do have are strong, seasoned veterans. I think these ladies are tired of being in the basement every season and they're ready to fight their way out. Will they relive those thrilling days of yesteryear? If I could make those kind of predictions I'd be going to the casinos. Was it a fluke?
Make sure you have your ticket for the March 11th for KCRW's Underground Bout when The Dreadnought Dorothys take on The Knockouts.
