CO-ED SCRIMMAGE: THE '80'S FITNESS EDITION

7/11/2016

Memorial Hall - With the home season behind them, The Roller Warriors put on the spandex leotards and laced up their skates for the '80's fitness themed co-ed scrimmage. The crowds are never all that large for these events but it's all for fun so those that show up just go with it. Just to let you in on a little secret folks, you can bring your own beer to these events as long as it's not in a glass container. With that in mind, crack open a cold one, prop your feet up and read on.

The first game was all female. They were split off into Team Fonda and Team Simmons. Team Simmons managed to dominate the game, leading 74 to 49 at Halftime and finally 161 to 132.

At Halftime, Madame McBomb was presented with the Best Dressed Female award and Commander Chronos won for the Male.

When the action got back under way, this time the men came out and joined the ladies and it was Team Fonda who would be taking the lead this time. They spanked Team Simmons 208 to 182.

Stay tuned in July as The All-Stars and Plan B hit the road to Lincoln, Nebraska to play The No Coast Derby Girls on the 23rd and on the 30th The Junior Warriors will start their season at Memorial Hall. You won't want to miss this. Stay connected with KCRW and The Wheel Press on Facebook.

The RInk of Fire 2016

Memorial Hall - It's time once again for the home teams to square off and see who takes home the trophy. Last year The Victory Vixens lived up to their name, will they do it again?

Before I get started on that, here's something that has changed this year-the trophy finally has a name. It was suggested that it be called The Tim Warder Cup in honor of Coach Ice. When it was put to a vote, the "aye"s had it before the nomination was even complete. Saturday also saw the unveiling of the leagues new logo. Feel free to post any comments or criticisms below. I, for one, am curious to know the fans reactions.

The first game of the night was between The Dreadnought Dorothys and The Knockouts. The Dorothys were playing for a chance to win third place while The Knockouts were looking at one last chance to win a game before the end of the season.

The Dorothys were invoking memories of their former glory years at the beginning of the season but then The Vixens put an end to that. The Knockouts have been plagued with injuries since before the first game. There were a couple of games where they had to recruit free agents just to fill out the roster. This was clearly not their season, but, this means that they'll get first pick from next seasons draft choices and the rebuilding can begin.

As for the game, The Dorothys came out strong and dropped the house on The Knockouts. By Halftime, the girls in gingham were leading 98 to 60 and by the time the last whistle blew the score was 173 to 138.

With the third and fourth place positions firmly set, it was time to move on to the main event, the fight for first.

The Black Eye Susans have only lost two of the six games of the season. Once to The Dorothys and once to The Victory Vixens. The Vixens have only lost once and that was to The Susans at the beginning of the season. That trophy was not going to be given up without a fight.

A fight is exactly what Enigma and the girls in black and yellow had on their hands. It took them a couple of jams to get warmed up but once The Vixens started scoring points, they became a force to be reckoned with. At the half, The Vixens were up 96 to 53 and as the dust settled, The Vixens had done it again with a final score of 170 to 130.

That wraps up another home season but fear not, there will be more derby action in July as The All-Stars and Plan B go to Lincoln, Nebraska to play The No Coast Derby Girls. Also in July will be the start of Juniors season. In the meantime, check out the co-ed bout that will be played on Friday June 24th.
