June is here and Summer has officially arrived. The sun shines a little brighter, the birds sing a little louder and the air is a little fresher. If you're a Kansas City roller derby fan, you understand that it's not just a change in the seasons, it's that joy has returned to Mudville! The KCRW All Stars had been in a slump on the road, but they've been making the most of their off time and hitting the practice track and really coming together as a team.
On June 7, they went up to Lincoln, NE and played Wasatch Roller Derby's Midnight Terror from Salt Lake City, UT. The clock ran out for Bruiser Ego and her girls and when the whistle blew, the KCRW All Stars were standing tall with a victory of 197 to 167.
With the newly rediscovered scent of victory in their nostrils, Mary Lou Wretched and the ladies in red and black took a little trip up to Iowa on Saturday, June 21 to take on the Des Moines Derby Dames. Lassie McSassy and her Dames put up a struggle but they couldn't fight the All Stars' momentum. At half time, Kansas City was already leading 168 to 43, by the time it was over, the lead had widened to 242 to 126.
The All Stars couldn't have picked a better time to start climbing their way back to victory. With Summer now here, tournament season is not too far off. In the month of September, Division 1 playoffs take place, and only the top 40 teams get invited. As of the end of May, KCRW was ranked 38. These new victories will help the team climb slightly in the rankings. It's an uphill skate, but one that the coaches and captains will be able to make one game at a time.
KCRW will next be taking on the Oklahoma Victory Dolls in Oklahoma City on July 19. They will be traveling with Plan B, who will be going up against OKVD's Battle Squad. Best of luck to both of the teams and let's hope July will be as good as June!
On June 27 through the 29, Plan B will be going to Lebanon, Missouri to participate in the Midwest Derby Fest. I will be providing complete coverage as your man on the scene so stay tuned to this page for all of the latest news on Plan B.
