Municipal Auditorium-Saturday, May 30th, the stakes are high and the pressure's on as the home teams are in the final three games before The Rink of Fire. The current rankings have The Dreadnought Dorothys just barely ahead of The Victory Vixens, The Black Eye Susans in third place with The Knockouts not too far behind. A loss for any team at this point could be disastrous.
In related news, the league recently had a mini draft of eligible Wreck League players (Do you have what it takes? Check the home page for more details). Along with the new draftees, former Dreadnought Dorothys Baby Buster and Raia Sunshine jumped ship and threw their names in the hat. When asked about their decision, they both responded that they felt with so many people leaving, the teams were a little unbalanced. They had confidence that The Dorothys were a strong enough team to persevere without them. Raia Sunshine went to The Black Eye Susans, The Dorothys picked up Havok and Eve Illness, The Knockouts got Rogue and Baby Buster is now a Victory Vixen.
When I pointed out the twist of fate that now pits her against her former team, she laughed and said, "I didn't even think about that, but I'm excited, it'll be fun."
The first game of the night was between The Dreadnought Dorothys and The Victory Vixens. Both teams have three wins and one loss. The Vixens loss was to The Black Eye Susans at the last game. The Dorothys one loss was to The Vixens in Aprils Underground game. Now with rankings and honor on the line, The Dorothys were going to settle for nothing less than blood.
When I spoke with Dorothys team captain, Erin No Bragh, she admitted to being justifiably nervous but she had confidence in her teams abilities to clean up penalties and in the improvements both offensive and defensively. "And" she added, "they don't have Rat."
Track Rat, jammer extraordinaire for both The Vixens and The All-Stars, a name that when seen on skating rosters makes coaches rethink their strategies but, when seen on the injured/absent list, they breathe a sigh of relief. Such was the case on this night as Track Rat shared that list with Hydrogen Bombshell, Remy Killjoy and Sheeza Riot.
The Dorothys were missing the double threat jamming blocker Cupcake Smasher, Eve Illness, Golden Meanie and Road Hash.
I caught up with The Vixens team captain, Rump Wrecker, to get her thoughts on the rematch. She said their confidence was still high despite their last game and Track Rats absence. "It's going to be an exciting game" she said, "we expect a tough bout. I'm sure they're hungry to beat us after we played them last time."
The teams line up and the crowd counts down. The battle begins as walls are formed, gaps are exploited, and penalties are called. By Halftime The Dorothys had established dominance with a score 69 to 48.
The Vixens were unable to stop their momentum and by the end of the second half there was a fresh tally mark in their loss category as The Dreadnought Dorothys won 132 to 96.
During the between game intermission, The Junior Warriors put on an expo bout. It was one ten minute period and they broke up into Team Black and Team White. Team Black got the job done with a final score of 44 to 19. Their season opener is on the 15th, further information is available on this website.
When I spoke with Mary Lou Wretched, team captain of The Knockouts, she sounded enthusiastic about the game-"The Susans are always a tough team, but traditionally, (we) have always kept the games neck-and-neck, so fans can expect the same intensity and stellar game play they're used to."
Black Eye Susans captain, Tuff Noogies, had a similar outlook on the game as she told me that they weren't letting their prior victory make them over confident and that they were just going out there and playing to the best of their abilities.
The Knockouts, essentially, had their full roster while The Susans were playing without Peter Baberiel.
The girls in teal played like a team Hell bent to get out of the basement. Their score was in triple digits before Halftime, leading 127 to 86.
They came back in the second half with the same intensity and at the end of it all, they had claimed the third place spot with a final score of 266 to 185.
On a final note, this was Peanut Butter Panic's last game with KCRW. She's retiring to pursue her dream of exploring the world. Safe travels,my friend.
