The travel teams hit the road on July 11th to play The No Coast Derby Girls at The Ice Box. Both The Mad Maxines and The Road Warriors have proven to be formidable opponents in the past and this night would be no different. The first game of the double header was between Plan B and The Road Warriors.
Last June, when these two teams met, The Road Warriors skated away victoriously with a score of 154 to 133. The season prior to that, Plan B took a merciless beating with the final score 271 to 122. This season they were looking to turn that around.
Team captains Sk8l Attraction and Chewbokma toed the line for the first jam of the game. SK8L gave Plan B an early lead which was held until the third jam when The Road Warriors scored 20 to KC's 13. Plan B never caught back up in the first period and the score was 82 to 64 going into halftime.
Plan B never seemed to fall farther than 30 points behind but never got closer than 20 points until late in the second period. In Jam 20, Sk8l gets a 14 point power jam that brings the score to 167 to 159, Road Warriors favor. In the next jam, Sk8l is still jamming, this time against Sunshine. Sk8l gets lead but is sent to the box. Sunshine manages to get a 9 point lead out of her power jam as Sk8l comes back out of the box. Official time has run out and there is only 22 seconds left on the jam clock. Both skaters are moving like their lives depend on it, trying to get all of the points they can. The whistle blows and for a moment it looks as if Plan B has an easy victory. After a five minute official review, the points are reassessed and the score is tied sending the game into overtime.
Sk8l once again takes the line against Chewbokma. In Overtime there is no lead jammer and whoever scores the most points in two minutes wins the game. The whistle blows and the skaters are off. Chewbokma makes it out of the pack with Sk8l barely a stride behind her. The two skaters race around for their scoring run. The blockers are not giving an inch to either skater. Just before Chewbokma makes it out of the pack she is called for a cut track. Sk8l has a power jam with 40 seconds left on the clock. By the time Chewbokma makes it back on the track Sk8l has won the game with a score of 210 to 206. Games like this is why we love this sport.
The All-Stars have played The Mad Maxines six times previously. The Mad Maxines have yet to win a game against The All-Stars. This is the night they're hoping to turn that around. I asked team captain Ripa what she thought the chances were that this would be their night. She wasn't trying to see this as anything more than just another game, "we expect to win no matter who we play", she said this with an air of confidence that told me that The All-Stars were going to have their hands full and victory would be hard earned. I asked Dr. Dread for her thoughts on the game- "We've never played Anna Maniac AND Flash Gloria before so that should be an interesting challenge."
It was a shaky start with The All-Stars not even showing up on the board until the third jam when Reptar scored 12 to their 26. The following jam saw Jessika Boom put The All-Stars in the lead with an amazing 19 point jam making the score 31 to 26. They managed to hold on to it until the the middle of the period when The Mad Maxines took back the lead and held it. By Halftime the score was 121 to 102.
For a couple of jams later in the second period, it looked as if history might repeat itself as The All-Stars got within 10 points of a tie but then fell back again. The final score was 208 to 161 as The Mad Maxines finally pulled off a victory against their long time rivals.
Don't forget to tune in for Plan B's trip to St. Louis on August 1st to take on Arch Rivals' Saint Lunachix. Thanks for reading and we'll see you next time.
