Yes, derby fans, it's that time of year again. It's time to dust off the hibachi, stock up on Boulevard, and don the black and red because your Roller Warriors are getting ready to kick off a new season. For those of you not in the know, the team has a new home at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas. It's been a while in the making, but it finally happened and as a house warming event, KCRW hostessed a co-ed scrimmage on Friday, February 19. Open to all skaters—alumni, non-KCRW skaters, and current KCRW skaters alike—the scrimmage was a good excuse to get together and just have a little fun before the season gets under way. There were two teams made up of Fountain City, Mens Derby and, of course, KCRW skaters. Team Black was led by former KCRW All Star and Dreadnought Dorothy, Eclipse, while Team White was captained by one of KCRW travel team’s new coaches, Holden U. Backs. The skaters varied in skill levels, but the teams were pretty evenly balanced.
With the first jam under way, Cobra Shark drew first blood with 4 points for Team White while Team Black only answered one of them. That, however, was the only time Team White had the lead. By Halftime, Team Black was leading 93 to 55. At the end of the second period, they stood victorious 177 to 118.
Points were simply a byproduct of the good time everybody was having just getting to play against and with skaters outside of their respective leagues. The house was warmed and on March 5, it will be time to get serious as the Victory Vixens take on the Black Eye Susans and the Knockouts go up against the Dreadnought Dorothys for game one of a new season. Contact your favorite skater or see this website for tickets because you don't want to miss this. Also, don't forget to like the new Facebook page for The Wheel Press. See you on the 5th!
