Wednesday, April 15 - Winnwood Skate Center once again held the first half of yet another amazing derby match for Underground Game 3. The event you've all been waiting for finally happened April 15th, just in time to take the sting out of Tax Day. The undefeated Dreadnought Dorothys went head to head against the undefeated Victory Vixens. The first major change of the season would happen on this night.
I had a chance to speak with both captains prior to the game and both sounded focused and ready for the game. Erin No Bragh said that she and The Dorothys were "cautiously confident" and not under estimating The Vixens. When I asked Vixens' captain, Rump Wrecker, for her thoughts on the upcoming game she told me, "This is the most excited I've been for a game since my first!" She gave me a brief run down of everything the team has been doing to keep themselves focused on the current season and when asked for a prediction she said, "It's going to be close but we're going to win."
The teams lined up, the crowd counted down and the whistle blew. The game was under way. The Dorothys came out strong and held The Vixens at a 20 point lead going into halftime. The Vixens were far from rolling over and accepting defeat, the first half just wasn't their game. The Dorothys defense just seemed to be everywhere at once and Case Closed and Dr. Dread moved like nothing could stop them. The game, however, was far from over.
The second half would see the blood sweat and tears of both teams as they fought to stay on top. Typically, it's a sign of inexperience and sloppy playing when a player fouls out. There's also the flip side of that coin that shows the level of determination. Both teams kept the penalty box officials busy all night and by the middle of the second half, you couldn't help but wonder if The Dorothys would have enough players left to finish the game. The Vixens were down a few players as well. When the period is only 20 minutes long, the number of penalties before ejection drops to five. They add up fast.
Dr. Dread and Chum Fiesta toe the line for what would be the final jam of the night. The score is tied and there's less than a minute left on the period clock. Chum Fiesta got lead but Dr. Dread managed to start her scoring run first. She was half way through the pack when she was sent to the box for a cut track. If Chum Fiesta can make it through the pack and call of the jam, the game is over. With 3 seconds left on the period clock, Chum Fiesta is sent to the box before she can call the jam. There is still a minute left on the jam clock and no lead jammer. The game is not over yet. Dr. Dread gets pushed out of the box early. The Vixens defense is all over her. Chum Fiesta is out of the box. Both jammers are now fighting their way through the pack as the final seconds tick off the clock. The whistle blows and the officials confer. After a few tense moments, the official final score reads Victory Vixens-109 Dreadnought Dorothys-104.
The top two positions are starting to take form, tune in next week to see whether The Black Eye Susans or The Knockouts will get their first victory of the season. Don't forget folks, you can get your tickets for the Underground Games right here on the website.
