Sunday, November 17th saw the dawn of KCRW’s 10th season (my 9th), back home where it all started at Winnwood Skate Center. The traditional rookie/exhibition bout had a military theme this year to honor our country’s veterans. A good deal of the proceeds went the Wounded Warriors charity that assists those who have been injured overseas.
The rookie bout is, you guessed it, a game spotlighting all of the new players to the league. There were a few veteran players rounding out the rosters just to keep the teams even, but essentially it’s all about the new girls.
Representing the Army was the G.I. Janes: Erin No Bragh, Hacksaw Hattie, Hey You, Hydrogen Bombshell, Impale Ale, Madam McBomb, Nancy Pants, Raia Sunshine, Reptar, Rayna Payne, Rump Wrecker, Stratus Fear, Twisted Momma, and Vespa.
In white uniforms representing the Navy was the Slaughterhouse Sailors: Angry Berta, Ash Ketch Em, Golden Meanie, Hella Hitzgerald, JenOOH!cide, Love Tap, Lunesta, Mayhem Myers, the Mexicutioner, Peanut Butter Panic, Remy Killjoy, Tara Tendon, Technolongi, and Xcelerator.
The G.I. Janes took control of the scoreboard early and managed to maintain a healthy lead through most of the game. The Sailors would get close, but they were never able to overtake them. There was some unexpected tumult in the second half when Janes jammer Hydrogen Bombshell took a hit to the back. She was slow to get up but was able to skate off the track by herself. Hopefully a little ice and rest will be all it takes to get her back to 100%. The final score was G.I. Janes 135 Slaughterhouse Sailors 108.
For the exhibition bout, the veteran players formed two teams representing the Air Force (Fly Girls) and the Marines (the Devil Dames). The first few jams saw the score flip favor several times, but by half time, the Fly Girls were leading 84 to 63.
The Devil Dames spent the rest of the second half fighting their way toward victory. Finally, with one jam left, the score was Devil Dames 132 Fly Girls 130. Dr. Dread (formerly Shady O’Dread) was jamming for the Fly Girls against Jade Lightning. Both jammers were skating like there was no tomorrow and the blockers were all working over time. The game clock ran out and there was about a minute left on the jam clock when there is a pile up in the second turn. Jade Lightning, who was lead jammer, throws caution to the wind and calls the jam.
The referees take an official time out to sort out who scored what and where. When the dust finally settles, it is the Fly Girls who are victorious with the final score 136 to 132.
These are the moments that make this game fun. This was just a preview of coming attractions, folks — the real action starts on December 8th when the home teams get locked into mortal combat to see who will fight it out for the number one spot in the Rink Of Fire!
