Mission forward: KCRW is officially a non-profit organization in the Kansas City area

Founded in 2004, Kansas City Roller Warriors emerged in an era of roller derby’s women-led, DIY ethos, “By the skater, for the skater,” and which used the sport as an outlet to push the boundaries of what was expected of them. KCRW was also one of the first leagues that helped establish the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), allowing our teams to compete locally, nationally, and internationally and to serve on international task forces and committees. We’re proud to be a part of the momentum that started it all.

After 15 active years within Kansas City and WFTDA, our league members decided it was time to make a change. Roller derby has grown to become a global community that expanded its reach. Today, it empowers and inspires individuals and communities we never anticipated from the start. We saw ourselves becoming an equitable resource and space within the greater Kansas City community and knew it was time to make a big change. In 2019, we filed formal paperwork and today are proud to announce we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit sports organization.

Our new mission and vision
Our new mission and vision are designed to tell our community what it is we stand for as a modern roller derby league and as a non-profit organization in the Kansas City area.

Our mission: Kansas City Roller Warriors is committed to developing its players, coaches, referees, and volunteers to excel at the sport of roller derby while inspiring them to be leaders who provide safe, empowering, inclusive opportunities for our community.

Our vision: Kansas City Roller Warriors envisions a world where roller derby actively contributes to a positive societal change in our community. Our organization supports initiatives that enhance the health, wellness, and emotional well-being of our members and youth throughout the greater Kansas City area.

And we intend to live the following core values as we focus on these tenants of our organization:
  • We offer full, unbiased, equitable access to our sport.
  • We act with integrity, kindness, and compassion.
  • We have the responsibility to provide a safe and inclusive space.
  • We empower each other and ourselves.
  • We have a culture of trust driven by personal ownership, transparency, and mutual respect.
  • We are committed to a supportive, family-like atmosphere that inspires teamwork.
  • We strive for excellence in roller derby by cultivating resilience and character.

Moving forward as a non-profit organization in the Kansas City area
We are excited about these changes to our league! This great news means any donations given to us to support our endeavors—such as a juniors program that facilitates regional competition, skating clinics that promote wellness for Kansas Citians, and a competitive adult program that allows for international competition and representation—are tax deductible.

As we wrap up 2021 and KCRW begins to make its post-Covid comeback, please consider a one-time package purchase or recurring donation to the Kansas City Roller Warriors as we look to rebuild our league and ensure we are able to build upon our efforts within our community.

Suggested packages include:
  • Rink Rash: Your $25 donation will help us rebuild our first aid supplies, such as ice packs, bandages, splints, wraps, and tape
  • Apex Jump: Your $100 donation will help cover the costs associated with our juniors and adult travel team competition
  • Star Pass: Your $300 donation will supply a complete gear package to a junior skater
  • Bridge the Pack: Your $500 donation will provide a full season scholarship for a junior skater

Donations may be made through PayPal.
